Transportation rental

There is no public transportation on Samui. And please DO NOT walk on the sides of the roads as it can be dangerous.
So how do you get around the island?

Taxis in Samui: hiring a cheap car is a better option than an expensive cab, as it gives you the opportunity to explore Samui at your own pace. Cab prices on Samui are very high. If you plan to visit the island for an extended period of time, renting a car may be a more economical option. As in many places in Southeast Asia, the service is run by mafias. The meters in the cabs serve as decoration. Expect hard and tedious bargaining with cab drivers, which will always result in you overpaying.

Songthaew: These are the equivalent of tuk-tuks on the islands and outside of major cities. They are pickup trucks converted to tow rows of seats in the back, hence the name “songthaew”, which means “row towing” in Thai. They work like large tuk-tuks if they’re only transporting you, or like utility vehicles as they can carry several customers at once. You stop them like a cab and discuss your destination and price. Their prices are lower than cabs, but you have to share the ride and they can be slower.

Renting a scooter: Very dangerous if you have no driving experience, and not the best option in case of rain. Scooters are an inexpensive and enjoyable option for getting around the island, but extremely dangerous. Samui’s roads have one of the highest motorcycle accident rates in the world. It is not an option for novice drivers or families. We have seen tourist families of 3 or even 4 people on one scooter – it’s a disaster just waiting to happen.

Car rental in Samui: Safer, more comfortable and versatile. Highly recommended for any visit of more than 7 days. Driving on Samui is easier than on the mainland. There is a convenient “ring road” around the island that will get you wherever you need to go without any problems. Just watch out for motorcycles passing on both sides and make sure the side of the road is clear before turning, overtaking or changing lanes. Book in advance to get the best price and, if possible, try to rent a car from reputable rental companies such as Avis, Sixt, National or Europcar, which are more likely to pick up cars from Samui Airport. If you decide to rent a car from a local supplier, carefully review the rental agreement and terms and conditions and walk away if anything seems questionable. NEVER leave your passport or any form of identification as collateral.
